Young people in Sierra Leone face multiple barriers to their health and wellbeing. Girls are particularly affected, with three quarters of girls aged 15- 19 undergoing FGM (female genital mutilation). Almost 40% of young women aged 20-24 were married before the age of 18 and the birth rate is also one of the highest in the region. FEFP joined forces with Plan International and is working in the cities of Moyamba and Port Loko in Sierra Leone to provide schools with comprehensive sexual education (CSE) curriculums, training for teachers and health workers on delivering CSE, including facilitating conversations on attitudes and values and training for peer educators to support parents so that they can help their children to access health care as well as understanding contraception and harmful traditional practices like FGM.
Health centres in the project areas will get the support they need to become
accessible and inclusive facilities where adolescents can access treatment.
FEFP and Plan International aim to reach 50,000 young people over three years from July 2022 to July 2025.
