Madagascar has amongst the highest birth rates in the world (35/1000, in 2021). According to the Madagascar Ministry of health, 32 % of girls become pregnant before adulthood (under the age of 18). These early and very often unwanted pregnancies contribute to young women’s exclusion from education and work and keep them in poverty.
Akamasoa is a non-governmental organization, recognised as being of Public Interest by Government Decree No. 2004 – 164 of 03 February 2004. This organization has been helping the people of Ampitafa in the Vangaindrano district, Atsimo Antsinanana region of Madagascar, for over 25 years.
Akamasoa strongly believes in supporting adoption and appropriation of the comprehensive sexuality education programs, supporting all educational programs and training ships for young (mostly female) students, and offering sustainable access to services and health resources.
FEFP decided to support a project of Akamasoa in Ampitafa in the Vangaindrano district. This support includes the extension of the maternity ward, building of accommodation with showers, kitchen, bedrooms, the purchase of medical equipment and providing housing and a subsidy for each young person (primarily girls) during their internship or training period.
